Smoke control and the interface with mechanical control systems webinar

- Part of our Ask an Expert series

Presented by David Isaac from Fire and Safety Technologies

Date:    Wednesday, 22 September, 2021

AS 1670.1 Section 7 sets out the standards requirements for smoke detection, initiation, and control of air handling systems required to operate in fire mode.

This has introduced a number of changes that will have implications for fire safety, so, as part of our Ask an Expert series, David Issac has agreed to field your questions about them.

Come along to hear about how smoke detection and control are supposed to be interfaced with mechanical controls systems and what you need to do to comply with the standard.

To start the ball rolling, some of the issues likely to be addressed include:

  • Where do you need to use smoke detection for exit pressurisation?
  • When is a transmission required to be fire rated?
  • What are the control and indicating requirements for interfaces with fans, dampers, air handling units, and the like?

These and many other questions will be answered in the forum, and registered participants will be able to post their own questions before the event, so sign up today!

The development of fire safety strategies and holistic fire safety designs webinar

Presented by Peter Johnson, Arup

Date:    Thursday, 7 October, 2021
Time:  10am AEST

What are the benefits to fire safety engineers, fire system designers, and consumers of holistic fire safety design?

How can a holistic perspective be used to develop effective fire safety strategies that will protect buildings and their occupants from the risk of fire?

With the recent publication by the Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) of the Australia Fire Engineering Guidelines (AFEG), a draft Code of Conduct for Fire Safety Engineers, and NCC requirements from 1 July, 2021, on stakeholder involvement in the development of Performance Solutions (NCC Vol. 1 A2.2(4)), there has been an increased emphasis on considering the whole building's needs when developing fire safety solutions.

In this webinar, Peter Johnson will examine the interaction between the 25 fire-related NCC Performance Requirements and the 15 Critical Factors highlighted in the latest NCC CPD course on fire safety.

He will emphasise the importance of fire safety engineers and fire system designers working very closely together to achieve the best project outcomes, and the major benefits that will flow to building owners and consumers from their early involvement in holistic design discussions.

The webinar will also address the development of performance solutions and the dangers in using them as alternatives to strict compliance with Australian Standards for fire safety systems, such as sprinklers and detection systems.

Talk to us about your role as an assessor or designer!

FPA Australia is taking expressions of interest from accredited practitioners for a series of recorded interviews.

The interviews will be question and answer sessions where a fire safety assessor or fire systems designer will be asked for their views about their role and responsibilities.

The aim is to show how experienced accredited individuals approach their work and comply with the rules, regulations, and legislation in New South Wales.

We will record the interviews and publish them online in our pre-recorded webinars.

If you are interested in taking part in one of these sessions, send us your expression of interest by Sunday 19 September, 2021.

If you have a question you'd like to put to the interviewees, please click here.
